Why Your Gameplan is Failing

Every coach has experienced moments where two players react differently to the same situation despite both believing they were following the game plan.

One presses and one covers. Clear and obvious sign of lack of team intelligence.

Neither player believes they made the wrong decision. As a coach myself, I've experienced this multiple times during matches and it's beyond frustrating..

These situations are often described as communication errors. In reality, but they are usually understanding errors.

Players do not enter matches with identical mental models simply because they attended the same meeting or was shown the same video clip. Every player interprets information through their own experiences, positional responsibilities, and previous learning.

I've had the best feeling before hundreds of matches. I really felt the players understood the gameplan, were aligned, etc, but wow I was wrong. Very wrong.

Without making those interpretations visible, coaches are left assuming alignment rather than confirming it.

The objective of tactical coaching is therefore not only to communicate a playing style but to establish a shared understanding of it.

This requires creating opportunities for players to compare perspectives, explain their reasoning, and recognise where their interpretations differ from those of their teammates. Many teams don't have time for these methods which is why a lot of teams use Taptics

Coach sends clip + questions --> Players answer --> Coach get insight into alignment --> Coach improves alignment based on insight from players. --> Repeat.

Only then can individual understanding become team intelligence.

The strongest teams are rarely those with the most information.

They are the teams with the most aligned understanding.
